“Honey! We’re home!” Stirling calls out as we open the giant double-volume entryway of Nana’s cabin. The tree is never going to fit. I am not an engineer, but it doesn’t take an engineer to see that from where I’m standing. Nana is going to lose her mind when she sees this thing. I hear the laughter and chatter of the White family women floating in from the living room,. When I go inside, they’re surrounded by Christmas ornaments spread across the floor.

The sparkly greens, reds, and golds of the ornaments and string lights remind me how Nana decorated her house every holiday. She always took it to another level. She had so many Christmas lights you could see her house from outer space.

I spot Lily, and my heart flutters at the sight of her; I’m glad she’s here. When she spins around to face me, she’s tied up in Christmas lights, laughing so hard she nearly trips.

The house is festive and filled with love, the aroma of ginger mingling with cinnamon, and now pine needles.

“What is that?” Nana asks as my brothers come up behind me, trying to pivot the tree inside the house. I see Lily trying not to laugh about it, but she can’t help herself.

“Wasn’t me!” I raise my hands in surrender. “I told them no giant trees per Nana’s orders, so this time I cannot be blamed.”

“Where is that monstrosity going to go?” Nana asks, assessing the tree. “I’m going to have to sit in the tree to watch TV and get warm by the fire.” Nana shakes her head and looks past me to Silas, who is trying his best to act innocent. “You boys are so full of it, you know that?”

Nana moves aside so they can try to squash the tree inside her living room. “Do you have a ladder?” she asks. “How in the heck are we going to decorate it? Did you bring mountain climbing gear for your Nana, too?”

“Stirling has a ladder on his truck,” Simon says, following behind the tree. “I’m sure it’s tall enough to reach the top.”

Simon is the worst when it comes to tree decorating. Not because he’s bad—he’s amazing, in fact. His designer self just makes everything too serious. If it’s not perfect, then in Simon’s eyes it’s unacceptable. I know he’s going to insist that this tree have a perfectly balanced distribution of ornaments, front to back, with coordinating colors. I can already see Stirling rolling his eyes.

“I can’t take you lot anywhere,” Nana huffs, and goes back to helping the ladies unpack decorations and tinsel. “Don’t break my house down getting it up!”

I watch Nana cringe as my brothers almost knock down half the room while trying to swing the tree upright. The chandelier clangs and swings while I grit my teeth, hoping it doesn’t fall on one of us.

“Spencer,” Nana calls me aside. I walk over to her, where she has a special box open. It is filled with Christmas ornament balls—and each one has a name on it.
